[ Abstract ]
These days the number of individuals who select various sports activities have increased nationwide. More widespread participation in sports has led to an increase in sports-related dental injuries. Today, it is not uncommon to find that patients sustaining oral-maxillo facial injuries visit a dental office.
The increase in such injuries has made individuals concerned with sports activities -- coaches, trainers, playes, athletic directors, parents, and dentists -- aware of the importance of mouth protection.
Participant's in sports activities have started to wear mouth guards. Dentists have had more opportunity of fabricating custom-made type mouthguard for them.
Such evidence shows the need for more dentists becoming involved in sports-related dental care.
It is believed meaningful to dental practitioners to discuss a keynote subject on "Today's and Future's Sports Dentistry" at the conference of Japanese Academy of Sports Dentistry.
This article will describe sports dentistry from a dental practitioner's view point.

In addition, weight training should be suitable for each member if it is incorporated into the program.
2) Provide the coaches and trainers for regular and timely lessons or seminars in order to give them necessary and useful information about proper exercise and training including warm-up and -down, weight training, injury prevention during athletic participation, etc.
3) Popularize mouthguards, which are small but effective pieces for injury prevention.
4) Make smooth channels between school doctors and sports associations, and between school doctors and sports doctors.
5) Have dentists participate in games as a ground doctor.
