Laboratory procedures of fabricating a mouth guard appliance
[ Publication ]
Ikeda M. : Laboratory procedures of fabricating a mouth guard appliance, The Journal of Denyal Technology, 21(6), 581~588, 1993.
[ Abstract ]
In Japan, these days more and more contact sports athletes have asked dental clinics to make custom-made mouthguards for them. However, not many of the clinics have fulfiled their request.
It doesn't take much time for a dental clinic to fabricate a custom-made mouthguard. Cooperation of the dentist and dental technician can save a lot of time. The dentist takes the first step, such as carries out a thorough examination of dentition, and them takes a good impression of the upper arch.
The dental technician takes the next, such as, fabricates a mouthguard by using a cast or model in dental stone, and then trim it with crown and bridge scissors.
This article with a lot of photographs describes the fabrication of a custom-made mouthguard for contact sports athletes.
I hope this will be of help to both dentists and dental technicians, especially to those who are going to master the technique.

[ Publication ]
Sotokawa T., Yamamoto K. : Mouthguards for Rugby Players, Sportsmedicine Quarterly, Winter, 2 : 25~32, 1990.
[ Abstract ]
In Japan, not so many participants in rugby football wear mouthguards, compared with those in boxing or American football. Rugby is, however, one of the sports with the highest incidence of dental injury. Therefore, all the participants in rugby football should be aware of the importance of mouth protection and the types of mouthguards available. In addition, it is recommended that mandatory mouthguard regulations be established to prevent dental injury.
We here introduce mouthguards for rugby players, talking about them.

[ Publication ]
Sotokawa T.:Reaction to a lecture on mouthguards to the members of a high school rugby club, The Nippon Dental Review,599 :191~195, 1992.
[ Abstract ]
Author had an opportunity to give a lecture on mouthguards to the members of a rugby club of a high school in Iwate.
In the off-season, the questionnairing to the same members was conducted as to what they thought about mouthguard use after the lecture and whether they began to wear mouthguards.
The results showed that most of them got aware of the inportance of mouthguard protection and wanted to know more about mouthguards, such as types and functions.
A regular lecture given by sports dentists is considered necessary for the students, and the manager and coaches as well. They can always give information and advice of mouthguards to their students, if necessary.
Mandatory mouthguard rules for high school rugby players should be established as soon as possible.
